Let’s Talk HIIT

I know there are some of you out there who just shuddered by simply reading the word HIIT but I am writing this blog post to help you to change that mentality. I know that burpees and jump squats can be an absolute pain in the ass (both literally and metaphorically) but unfortunately for you HIIT haters, they get RESULTS.

What exactly is HIIT?

HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) sessions combine short, sharp bursts of intense exercise with periods of rest or low-intensity exercise. Most of these sessions consist of both cardio and strength training with minimal downtime. I won’t lie, I love my downtime in a workout, but the upside of fewer breaks is a more efficient workout and a lasting burn!

If I haven’t convinced you yet, here are some of my top reasons for loving a good old HIIT session.

  1. Efficiency – High-intensity workouts have been proven to provide the same results, if not greater, in half the time of a low-intensity session.
  2. Post Workout Burn – Simply put, your body doesn’t stop burning calories the moment your workout finishes. There’s this thing called EPOC (it’s worth a google). EPOC stands for excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. This refers to the energy your body exerts to recover from a workout and for HIIT workouts, it is a bloody good burn.
  3. Variety – The options are endless when it comes to HIIT. There are thousands of high-intensity exercises out there in the world, so no workout has to be the same.
  4. Minimal/No Equipment – This is by far my favourite reason to love HIIT. The majority of HIIT workouts can be done without any equipment at all and those that do require equipment can easily be substituted for tins of baked beans or a couple of bottles of wine (if that is more readily available!)
  5. Mood Booster – Nothing makes you feel fierce and more accomplished than finishing an intense 20-minute workout. Whether you just got it done or you loved every second, you will still get that incredible endorphin rush when you’ve finished.

There you have it. I hope this has helped you to see HIIT in a different light and the next time you’re cursing at me during my masterclasses, remember the above benefits and KIC on. 😉

Happy HIITING!
