Laura’s top tips for keeping healthy and active throughout the festive season

The festive season is such an exciting and joyous time. Family, friends, food, drinks – all the good things. But it’s also busy, and busy can sometimes make us feel a bit stressed or out of routine!

We get busier, socialising become more frequent and time for yourself is squeezed. I know I find myself getting so busy that my normal routine will chop and change a little, and sometimes feel a bit more stressed or anxious than usual, and you might be similar. However, I want to take a moment to remind you that it is going to be okay.

The festive season is only about 8% of our entire year! Thinking about it this way might hopefully put it into a little more perspective and help you realise that a few weeks of change won’t really mean much in the long run.

However, if you’re still feeling a bit nervous about staying healthy and active throughout the festive season, here are my top tips to help you:

1. Try to fit a workout into your routine and be and be realistic about your time for movement

  • Now more than ever it’s important to set yourself workout reminders/schedule in your workouts so that you can fit it in around your commitments. If you can only squeeze in a 10-minute KICMini workout, that’s perfectly fine – 10 minutes of movement is always better than no movement. Plus we’ve just launched brand NEW KICMinis with Kika, Leo and Brooke to keep things fresh and motivate you to move!
  • KIC has you covered with 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30-minute workouts – there is guaranteed to be a session to fit in with your everyday.
  • Think of exercise as your ‘me time’ and use it to clear your mind, relieve stress and do something great for your mind and body.
  • Just because you might not have access to your full gym or usual set-up over the holidays doesn’t mean you have to stop moving your body entirely – KIC has countless equipment-free workouts for you to choose from!
  • Most importantly choose movement that you enjoy! This will mean you look forward to your workout and feel more inclined to make time for it.

2. Have feel good food options and freezer friendly meal prep at the ready!

  • Use the time you do have to set yourself for the days when you’re run off your feet! Often things will come up out of the blue and you’ll be left time-poor or too tired to cook! So try setting aside an hour to do a quick shop (or shop online to save even more time) and cook up and a meal or two that you can portion, freeze and defrost as needed.
  • You can see some of the best KIC freezer-friendly meal prep recipes here.
  • I also highly recommend having some fresh fruit around to grab and enjoy on the days you’re crazy busy. Fruit is also one of the best snacks to enjoy as it’s high in fibre, minimally processed and rich in nutrients. I always love having apples, bananas and strawberries on hand.
  • When you’ve got food options at the ready that you love and that make you feel good, you’re going to have the energy to take on and enjoy the busyness of the festive season.

3. Be kind to yourself and enjoy the festive season!

  • It’s a special time of the year and one of the first we’ve had in a while that hasn’t been restricted due to the pandemic. So remember to enjoy it! Time with your loved ones is so precious and be sure to cherish it because you never know what the next year might bring.
  • It’s normal for your routine to look a bit different in December – mine sure does! I want to remind you that a few weeks of a slightly adjusted schedule or not being able to move as frequently is not going to undo any of your healthy habits! If you’re not able to be in your usual routine, that’s totally okay – it’s about consistency and progress, not perfection!
  • Be kind to yourself, be flexible and know that Christmas is not the time to be harsh on yourself, rather, Christmas is a time for family, friends, connections and love.
