Why Spring is the best time to KIC’start or KIC’on your running

Whether you’re a seasoned runner looking to improve your pace or new to running and want to prove to yourself that you ARE a runner, there is no better time than spring to dust off the running shoes and start running.

Here’s why…

The health benefits

Running has so many perks – it is an incredible form of movement which supports both your physical and mental health. Running improves your cardiovascular fitness, builds your endurance and supports your resting heart rate, and as we start to enjoy longer and warmer days, there’s no better time than now to incorporate running into your routine.

Running is also a wonderful mechanism to decompress and declutter your mind, helping to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety Just ask our CEO and co-founder Laura Henshaw who you’ll find clocking up the km’s 3-4 times a week because of how running makes her feel.

“I love running because of how empowering it feels. When I pop my headphones in and set off on a run, I’m able to switch off from the day that was or the busy day ahead and just focus on me. Running is my form of meditation, it’s the most powerful mechanism for me to declutter my mind and sweat off any stress.”

The goldilocks (i.e. perfect) weather conditions

It’s never much fun running in extreme weather conditions. Heavy rain, freezing cold or stifling hot days can really deter us from getting out for a run. But spring blesses us with beautiful mornings and mild afternoons which is far more motivating! Plus, it’s a seriously beautiful time of the year with trees sprouting new leaves and flowers blooming, making those running tracks adorned by nature even more enticing.

The increased daylight

Alongside better weather, spring also boasts more daylight which makes getting outside to run a whole lot easier and safer. Getting up for a run or a workout in the pitch black can be really unmotivating, but the lighter mornings give us options. Fresh air also does more than you think in resetting your mind for the day ahead, and going for a run won’t cost you a cent.

The vitamin D boost

If you’re in the southern hemisphere and coming out of winter like us, your vitamin D levels might be a little low – especially if you’re someone who works in an office or does shift work, making it trickier to get out during daylight hours when the days are short.

The good news is, because it’s spring, we can look forward to longer days and more opportunities to boost your vitamin D levels – hint hint… go for a run!

When exposed to sunlight, your body produces vitamin D which supports calcium absorption, your immune system and helps to regulate your mood and combat negative emotions.

However, as incredible as it is to run in the sun, always remember to slip, slop, and slap plenty of SPF.

The perfect timing

If you’re looking to complete a running program, there’s no better time than spring! With the weather improving and the end of the year (while close) far enough to not feel completely crazy busy with festivities, this is the perfect time to work on your running goals. For example, if you decide to participate in one of our KICRUN programs, it’s a great time of year to dedicate yourself to your running for 8 weeks as you’ll be done and dusted before December madness sets in.

No matter where you’re at in your running journey, spring time is the perfect time to KIC’start or KIC’on with your running.

If you need a reminder that you can do it, and that you can believe in yourself, this is for you – you’ve got this.
