Our top tips for joining a gym that works for you

If you’re thinking about joining a gym, but not sure which one to invest those precious dollars into, here are the things we think you should look for.

Joining a gym is a big deal, so it’s important to do the research and make sure it ticks all of your boxes. Does it bring the vibes? Does it have a big space and is there a range of equipment available? Thinking about these things is important so you can make the most out of your gym session, even during peak times or when it’s busy!

Here’s what we suggest looking out for. Before you know it, you’ll be lifting your limits in no time!

Location

This might be one of the most important things to consider. If you make working out feel as convenient as possible, you’re more likely to stay motivated. Signing up to a gym that’s too far away from your home or workplace might create more barriers to prioritising your health and fitness. We want to break those barriers down! Convenience is key.

Vibes!

What’s the atmosphere like? Is it welcoming? Is there plenty of space? What’s the music like and is it too loud? Is it CLEAN? Vibes are a big deal for us at Kic – the environment you’re working out in should feel good for you. While we know a jam packed gym can feel a bit overwhelming, sometimes a space that is busy does instil motivation in you and creates a good atmosphere. Cleanliness is also a non-negotiable for us.

Cost

All gyms operate differently, but for most you’ll have to opt in for a plan and pay a certain amount each month. Some may also want you to pay a joining fee, or commit to a set number of months, so it’s important you understand what your options are! We found that the average cost of a gym per week is between $15 to $20. We’d also recommend seeing if a free trial is available to you can make sure it’s the right fit before you commit!

Equipment

Make sure the gym has all the equipment you’ll need. You can get to know your gym equipment for our Lift and Express Lift program in this blog. Variety is important as well, for when the gym is busy, or when you need to regress, progress and level up your weights as necessary. If you’re considering a family membership deal, make sure the equipment and features suits everyone’s needs!

Hours

What time does it open and close? Maybe it’s a 24 hour gym? (Win!) It’s important to double check the opening hours so that it works for your lifestyle.

Parking

This one could be overlooked, but will make a big difference if parking is easy and you don’t have to pay for it. During busy times the last thing you want to do is spend an hour searching for a park or paying for parking every time, on top of paying for a gym membership.

Friends!

Are any of your mates using the same gym? Or maybe you could sign up with a friend and keep each other accountable? Working out with friends is a great way to stay motivated, or seeing people you know in the gym offers a nice social aspect too.
