Whether it’s been a hectic day at the office, or Harvey’s terrible two toddler tantrums are really testing my patience, having a short fuse is a feeling I know too well!
But, over the years I’ve learnt a handful of strategies that help me cope with stress, improve my resilience and become better equipped to handle those pesky challenges life throws at me.
When things are getting heated, here are a few things that help me keep my cool:
First, I’ll burn off some steam
KIC’s Physio, Ash Ormond, once told me that when your body is fuelled with stress and tension, a good way to regulate your nervous system is to focus on releasing adrenaline, before you try something mindful and mellow.
It makes sense when you think about it. Have you ever tried to meditate or jump into a yoga class when your body’s jittery and your mind’s going a million miles an hour? It can be really hard! Instead, I’ll crank up some music and literally shake it off, or run on the spot as fast as I can for a minute, before I calm my mind with a KIC yoga flow or meditation.
Smash a short and sweaty workout
This one probably doesn’t come as a surprise! Moving my body is hands down my favourite way to release stress. I’ll often follow one of Kika’s Barre Minis when I’m feeling overwhelmed. Her energy is infectious and her movements take my focus away from my busy brain, and into my body.
Step outside and go for a run
KIC Mummas can no doubt relate to this one… Leaving the house (alone!) to do something just for me is absolutely liberating! When it all gets a bit much at home, stepping outside for a breather, whether that’s a run or a walk around the block, is a powerful way to release endorphins and boost my mood.
Four-part breath
Let’s be real, you can’t always duck out for a run or get up and dance whenever you’re feeling agitated – can you imagine? Hah! Instead, KIC’s yogi, Jamie, taught me a calming breathing technique that I can literally do anywhere.
The four-part breath is so easy and discrete, simply breathe in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4, and repeat as many times as you need. It’s the perfect chill pill for when you’re stuck in a meeting or you can’t leave your desk.
Take a bath
Growing up, I can remember my mum taking regular baths. Now that I’m mum myself, I totally get it! She’d transform the bathroom into a candle-lit sanctuary, a blissful escape from the day-to-day madness of our family home.
Josh knows that a bath is like medicine for my soul. There’s been times where I’ll get home after a rough day and the bath will be poured with a glass of red wine waiting – now, that is speaking my love language!
Get crafty and draw
Harvey is a cutie and I love him beyond anything else, but far out he grinds my gears sometimes! It’s near impossible to just remove myself from the situation, so having a calming activity we can do together is key. I’ve always loved drawing, I find it incredibly therapeutic. I’ll pop on some music, make myself a cup of tea and we can get creative and chill, together.
It’s all about finding what works for you. If you’re looking for more inspo, the KIC app is full of movements, meals and meditations to help calm your mind and keep you cool.

A message to new mummas out there. These are things that I’m having to regularly remind myself of atm, so I thought ‘d share them with you.
I was fully aware of the term ‘mum guilt’ before Harvey came along, but I never knew how hard it would hit me. I work 4 days a week in the office, and even though I absolutely love my job, I’m not going to lie, some days can be really tough.
