Do you find yourself starting out your week with all the best intentions but can’t seem to hack the motivation?
You’re not alone!
Diane, our 55 year old incredible KIC member from the outskirts of Perth WA, recently completed our 5km KICRUN Program and has generously shared how she built and maintained her motivation, developed sustainable, healthy habits and broke down the all too familiar barriers she was experiencing when it came to running and exercise in general.
Even in the face of contracting the spicy cough!
Here’s Diane’s special story.
I’m rubbish at exercise. I have paid countless gym memberships months beyond the point of use. My daughter, Kate, who is a Physio has tried many ways to get me moving, get me fitter as I get older, but nothing seemed to stick until she got me the KIC app. It’s just developing a habit and removing barriers, she said.
So, I paid for the yearly sub to help build those sustainable habits. But of course, my mindset still wasn’t giving me the motivation I needed. But rather than get annoyed with my rubbishness, I started one habit – little walks with the dogs. Once that was a habit I found I wanted more and found it back on the KIC app – maybe I could turn my walks into a run.
So with dogs in tow, I started to listen to the lovely Laura AND I started running.
What a rush!
I live in the hills outside Perth so I tackled bush and hills. Laura made me feel great for turning up and now I was up for the challenge of potentially running 5kms.
As the weeks ticked over, I had to move to running with just one dog and then none and then I ran by the lake on the flat, but run I did. I found myself examining my splits, setting myself mini-goals and believing Laura when she said I was a runner.
Most days it was a slog. I kept waiting for that runner’s high, and when it didn’t arrive, I just gritted it out and my high came from the achievement of doing it anyway. It felt amazing to be moving, my resting heart rate slowed and I felt strong. When I couldn’t run, it felt wrong. Before I knew it, I was hooked.
The 20 and 25 minute runs were so tough but I did them. I KNEW I could do this. I decided to do the 5km KICRUN Program in a park run to have company, but I turned up early so just did it anyway.
5 @ 55. Wow!
Of course, it couldn’t stop there. I would keep running: Do park runs, Run For A Reason – just keep going.
But, plot twist, COVID had other ideas…
Three days after that run I was struck down with COVID. Three weeks on and I’m still struggling with COVID exhaustion and haven’t been able to run, but that’s okay. The KICRUN Program is still there to help. I know I can just start back at Week 3 and build back up to fitness again.
It’s not a race, it’s a journey and Laura will cheer me through it!
