Why you shouldn’t put ‘weightloss’ on your 2025 goals list

With the New Year around the corner, it’s natural to start setting intentions for the months ahead. But before we write down anything like “I’m going to lose X amount of weight,” let’s take a moment to reset our intentions to ensure your goals are centered on things that will lead to the healthiest and most sustainable results for you!

Firstly, I know how important your health and fitness goals are to you. You want to feel your best in 2025—fit, healthy, and thriving!

Your 2025 goals are so important for you to achieve – as they should be! And desiring to feel your best in 2025 is our goal for you too, which is why we want to ensure that your mindset and intentions ahead of the New Year will help you conquer your health and fitness goals with consistency, ease, and enjoyment.

What Happens When Weight Loss Is Your #1 Focus

When we set our key intention behind our health and fitness goals as “weight loss,” this often leads to an increase in pressure and overwhelm. Doing this tends to create restrictions and rules to ensure we “stick” to another diet plan or feel that our food choices must be “perfect.” This tends to lead to less intuitive decisions with food, more rigidity, and less enjoyment.

To feel our best, we need a sustainable approach—one that includes flexibility and choice around enjoyable foods. This means learning to say “Yes, please!” to dessert when you want it and “No, thank you!” when you don’t.

So instead of focusing on dropping pounds or fitting into a certain size, if you want to truly feel your best in 2025 (without restriction or yo-yo dieting!) this is what we want to begin focusing on instead.

Living the Lifestyle That Makes You Feel Your Absolute Best in Your Body

No restriction, no rules—just intentional, self-aware choices that make you feel energised, nourished, and cared for.

When people focus solely on weight loss, they often ask questions like “What will make me lose weight?” leading to cutting out food groups, drastically reducing portions, and constantly counting calories. This can make it hard to understand our body’s needs, creating feelings of restriction and deprivation. This, in turn, often leads to binge and emotional eating, steering us further from self-love and a healthy lifestyle.

Instead, we can begin to ask ourselves questions that enable choices from a place of love. Questions like “What does my body need today?” or “What would make me feel energised and strong right now?” can help us stay calm and content with our food choices.

So this year, I’m inviting you to focus on food choices that ask, “What will make me feel my best?” Shifting your energy toward nourishment, care, and truly listening to your body’s needs as we enter the New Year will allow you to make more intuitive food choices that align with your goals of feeling your best.

When we prioritise nourishment, we come from a place of love and respect for our bodies. We start to think about food as fuel that can help us feel amazing, energised, and ready to take on full days ahead!

This doesn’t mean you need to give up your desire to look your best—quite the opposite! When we nourish ourselves with food, prioritise sleep, stay hydrated, and engage in movement that feels good, our bodies naturally start to reflect these healthy choices. We feel empowered because we’re making choices that align with how we want to feel, not just how we want to look.

Try This

Instead of saying,
“I can’t have dessert,” → Try “Do I want dessert tonight?”
“I wish I could have that!” → Try “I absolutely can have that if I want it. How would this choice make me feel right now?”

It becomes about making choices that feel great for you rather than following rules. This subtle mindset shift lets you enjoy everything you love without the “all-or-nothing” pressure, which often leads to inconsistency and a sense of restriction.

Key Actions To Ensure You Thrive In 2025

  1. Prioritise Balanced Meals:
Rather than cutting out carbs, fats, or food groups, focus on adding variety. Ask yourself, “What could I add to make this plate more balanced?” This might mean adding veggies, proteins, or healthy fats that make you feel satisfied and energised.
  2. Move from a Place of Body Respect and Love:
Let’s ditch the “exercise to burn calories” mentality. Instead, find movement that genuinely feels good—maybe dancing, hiking, yoga, or a simple walk in the park. When movement is enjoyable, it’s much easier to make it a regular part of your life.
  3. Make Meals a Mindful Moment:
Try checking in with yourself before meals to gauge your hunger level and cravings. This simple practice can help you reconnect with your body’s natural cues, preventing eating out of habit or emotion.
  4. Focus on “How Will This Make Me Feel?” for All Food Choices:
Let your choices align with your goal of nourishing, energising, and reconnecting with your body’s needs.
  5. Celebrate The Small Daily & Weekly Wins
Rather than only celebrating when you reach a specific weight or begin to see physical changes, celebrate the small and meaningful changes. Did you nourish yourself today through your food choices? Did you move your body in a way that felt great? Has your energy been amazing recently? Do you notice yourself being able to run father with more stamina? Noticing and validating these shifts will keep you wanting to prioritise your health and keep you inspired!

So, as you think about your New Year’s goals, let’s skip the weight-loss-focused resolution and embrace a goal that brings joy, self-love, and lasting health into 2025 and beyond!
