We asked 7 people how the cost of living has impacted their fitness routine

Cancelling gym memberships, asking your parents for money, sacrificing social hangs for your morning Pilates class – these are all things our community has been experiencing of late.

‘Cozzie livs’ (or cost of living for those not privy to the Gen Z lingo), has been tightening all of our wallets recently. Many of us have had to cut back on activities or expenses we once never worried about. But unfortunately, it’s had an impact on our wellness routines too.

In a recent survey with our Kic community, 73% of you have had to cancel or reduce your studio Pilates memberships to save some extra cash. Which unfortunately isn’t surprising when we’re spending on average $160 per month on studio Pilates – with 1 in 4 spending $200-$300 (yikes!). Plus, 4 out of 5 of us have paid for a studio/gym membership we haven’t used before #guilty.

We’ve all had to make sacrifices, so to help you feel less alone, we asked seven Kic community members how the cost of living has impacted their wellness routine.

Olivia

I’m 25, married and living out of home and my dad has been paying my Pilates membership as I can’t afford to with the cost of living. He wanted me to be able to do exercise I like and knows it helps my mental health. Not easy having my dad still pay for things for me when I feel like I should be able to look after myself.

Kaitlyn

It sucks that I’ve had to cut back on something I love just because I can’t afford it anymore.

Kathryn

With doctors no longer bulk billing, food prices soaring and increased class prices it’s becoming more difficult and costly to prioritise my health! I’m a single 31 year old with a dog, I thought this was goals! However, it’s become so expensive to do it all alone with the rising costs associated with just living. It’s not even a champagne lifestyle with a lemonade budget now. It’s a lemonade lifestyle with what once could have got you bottles of champagne and now will be lucky to get a soda water at the pub!

Megan

As a household we’ve had to cancel all fitness memberships (gym, Pilates studio and a boot camp) but I have kept Kic as it allows me to do everything I love around work/mum life and it is cost effective. Buying workout gear is only when very much needed, as well as massages and extras that we both used to do before our one year old was born and we realised the juggle of full time work, mortgage repayments and full time childcare.

Tayla

I understand that Pilates studios owners have to up the cost for their own sake but it can be frustrating as a uni student having to pay so much for one class. Plus having to book 10 days in advance is so hard when the cost is so high and they book out so quickly!

Lauren

It’s really tough now as I have a newborn. Balancing family financials, baby costs and my fitness/mental health is really difficult. I feel guilty for going to Pilates because it is quite pricy but it has been so good for my mental health and to take a step away from everyday frustrations.

There’s no doubt that the cost of living has been impacting all of us, but it can really get us down when it impacts our wellness routines. Especially when they’re so crucial to our mental health. We’re here to say this doesn’t need to be the case!

Whether you’re still prioritising some outdoor time, through walking or running, or shifting to at-home Pilates, there’s an option which can still bring you all the good vibes.

With Kic, prices start at as little as $2.20 a week – that’s cheaper than your daily coffee!
