5 top tips to creating consistency in your routine

Consistency is something that many of us struggle with (myself included) but I’m writing this blog to share a few tips and tricks that have helped me to move my body every day.

Before I get stuck into it, I just want to say, go easy on yourself. Starting a fitness routine or getting back into your healthy habits can take time and patience so be gentle with yourself, celebrate the small wins and take it one step at a time.

TIP 1 – Schedule your workouts in

Lock it in! Think of it as a little date with yourself and don’t even think about standing yourself up. Whether it’s first thing in the morning, during your lunch break or late at night once the kids go to bed, find the time that works best for you and stick with it.

I find that mornings work the best because life has less of a chance to get in the way but what works for me may not always be best for you. Try a few different times and see what suits you the most.

TIP 2 – Mix it up

Variety is the key to success when it comes to keeping motivation levels high. Doing the same exercises every day can become a drag. Mix it up at least twice a week with something different. This could be a running session, Kic boxing, training with a friend or some mindfulness Pilates. Variety will help to keep your mind stimulated and assist in working all muscle groups over the week.

TIP 3 – Make your own little workout space

Having your own little exercise space can make your workouts more enjoyable, can limit distraction and it can also act as a reminder to get those workouts done. Every time you walk past your workout space, you will either be reminded of the workout you pushed to the side or you may feel a little bit of pride in yourself for getting it done today.

TIP 4 – Have your activewear and runners ready to go

Motivation is tricky enough on its own, so you want to make it as seamless as possible. Having your activewear clean and laid out for you before your daily workout is something that I have found super helpful over the years, especially in the colder months. There have been many occasions where I plan to do a workout and I can’t find my runners or a clean pair of tights, so…I gave up. Taking those extra few moments to get yourself prepared can make all the difference.

TIP 5 – Track your progress

This tip may be my number five, but it is just as important as the others. Tracking your progress and celebrating the wins can be such a huge motivator when it comes to establishing consistency. Whatever you do, don’t get fixated on weighing yourself. Your weight should never be a measurement of progress.

I hope these tips help you to improve consistency with your training. Remember to strive for progress, not perfection!
